My Review

The OST for Song of the Ocean is amazing, and this is not unexpected because the game itself is about music. With a whole cast of characters and instruments, it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that the soundtrack is so diverse. From the cheery number performed by Wendy at Rich's mansion to the dark song that Duorl plays on his flute, there is never a shortage of variety. Because of this, one thing that sets SOTO's OST apart from the other games is how balanced it is. While ATOV tends to be a little deep, and POTMW more light and airy, SOTO has the perfect balance of songs. From deep to whimsical to surreal and even tropical, there is never a boring moment on this soundtrack.

One aspect about it that I loved is how it didn't neglect the music played by the characters. Indeed, there is a bonus section on the second disc that contains some of the songs that the McBain Troupe performed throughout the game, as well as other artists. Even the undersea melodies used to unlock things are present! Falcom truly did not leave out anything, making it one of the most cohesive soundtracks around.

If you're looking for a soundtrack between the three games to start out with, I would definitely recommend this one. It gives a great taste of what the series is all about, from stunning songs fit for a symphony to light and atmospheric background music, there is truly something for everyone.

My picks: Leone's Etude, A Cagesong of the Ocean Suite - Prolouge - Breaking the Seal, A Cagesong of the Ocean Suite - Segue - Undersea Melody (sample these songs in the Jukebox)
